Disaster Recovery in the Face of Real Disaster
Arthrex is a global medical device company and leader in new product development and medical education in orthopedics. Arthrex continues to experience unprecedented growth and demand for their products throughout the world. Arthrex engaged Attunix to design a disaster recovery plan for five of their core applications. Little did they know that the skills Attunix taught them would come in handy so quickly!
Attunix worked closely with the application owners to understand how each application is used and the underlying architecture. We then designed and recommended the best solutions for providing disaster recovery and business continuity for each application. The recommended solutions were put in place using a combination of Azure Site Recovery, SQL database mirroring and asynchronous file copy utilities.
During the implementation phase of some applications and testing phase of others the project was disrupted by hurricane Irma. Arthrex was able to leverage the skills we taught them and use Azure Site Recovery to protect additional applications rapidly in the days leading up to landfall. Multiple Arthrex data centers were left without power for extended periods of time after the hurricane had passed. The Arthrex team was able to failover some applications to Azure using Azure Site Recovery and restore the services those applications provided. Interesting enough, and contrary to some beliefs from Arthrex employees, these servers continue to run from Azure despite the ability to migrate back to on-premises data centers.
